Entry Points That Do Not Require Licensure
Not every behavioral health job requires a license. Mental health technicians, behavioral health aides, peer support specialists, and case management assistants all work directly with clients under supervision, and most are reachable with a certificate, an associate degree, or in some cases a high school diploma plus employer training. These roles are genuine careers in their own right, and they are also the clearest way to find out whether clinical work suits you before committing to graduate school.
Paths That Lead to Independent Practice
If your goal is to diagnose, treat, and eventually practice independently, the route runs through a master's degree, supervised clinical hours, and a Board of Behavioral Sciences exam. California recognises several distinct licences, LPCC, LMFT, LCSW, and LEP, each with its own scope and its own supervision requirements. They are not interchangeable, and choosing between them early saves you coursework you would otherwise repeat.

The Work Looks Different Depending on the Setting
A county inpatient unit, a school district, a community clinic, a private group practice, and a residential treatment programme are genuinely different jobs even when the job title matches. Caseloads, documentation burden, autonomy, and pace vary enormously. If a particular setting appeals to you, look for roles there early rather than assuming you can transfer in later.
Plan the Credential Before the Job
California's requirements are specific and sequential, and the most common expensive mistake is completing coursework that does not count toward the licence you eventually want.
